The Balloona Stool

00323

I normally contribute to Design Tavern whenever I come across a very thought provoking interior – but how could I pass up the opportunity to share a thought provoking piece of furniture?   Every time I come across the Balloona Stool Confetti by designer Natalie Kruch for Umbra – my heart just begins to flutter and jealousy ensues.  I wish I had thought of that.

The Balloona chair consists of 500, intricately-tied balloons affixed to a wooden stool. And for a mere $200, you can purchase your very own here.

The art of typography.

Australian artist, Erin Smith, is pretty much your average young woman. The 27 year old artist moved to melbourne from Queensland to study graphic design and only just moved back to her home state this year. Graphic design didn’t turn out to be the career for her – “I find it difficult to sit in a chair inside for any period of time…and I’m hopeless at deadlines so I wasn’t very good.”

It was during her studies, however, that the fascination with typography really began.

Too trendy – Louboutin Rollerball Loafers

Do you think that these Christian Louboutin’s could be any more trendy? Studs and androgyny? I’m not sure I can handle it. They are pretty kick-ass. I could see some hipsters rocking these, but then again there is that price tag. Personally, if I’m going to pay $995 for Louboutins, I certainly won’t be picking these.

And I’m sleeping on a jet plane?

jumbo_hostel1

Getting stranded in an airport overnight is a real drag (trust me, it just happened to me recently) but imagine if this airport also offered some seriously interesting sleeping accommodations right next door, not so bad anymore?  Well, that is exactly what has happened at Stockholm’s Arlanda airport.  Parked directly in front of the airport is the Jumbo Hostel, the world’s first hostel on a plane.  The double-decker 1976 Boeing 747-200 comes fashioned with a lounge, cafe, and 25 rooms to sleep in -ranging from your usual hostel-style bunk beds to a “fancy” private cockpit suite.

A Musical Place

Hey there, lovely readers of Design Tavern. I’m Jenn, a new addition, and will be guest blogging from time to time. {Thanks Henry for giving me the opportunity!} I’m excited to be able to share my architecture and design finds with you, since I usually write on other subjects {mostly fashion, art, and life.}

I stumbled across these images and figured it would be a good start:

101 Things I learned In Architecture school

101 things i learned in architecture school

I would like to share with you a review of my newest, favourite-est architecture book –

101 Things I Learned in Architecture School

By Matthew Frederick

Frederick is an architect and urban designer from Massachusetts, and has taught at a number of colleges and universities, 101 Things is a collection of design ideas, philosophies and tips that he has put together to aid students in making sense of design and architecture as a whole.

The author’s note begins as follows..

“The architecture curriculum is a perplexing and unruly best, involving long hours, dense texts, and frequently obtuse instruction. If the lessons of architecture are fascinating (and the are), they are also fraught with so many exceptions and caveats the students can easily wonder if there is anything concrete (pun intended?) to lean about architecture at all.”

Frederick concludes, “This book aims to firm up the foundation of the architecture studio by providing rallying points upon which the design process may thrive.”

Frederick’s book was recommended to me by one of my tutors; it provides for students (and established professionals as he pointed out) the building blocks for architecture studio, providing students with fundamentals such as ‘how to draw a line’ to more complex theories of space, composition and design thinking.

The best thing about 101 Things I learned in architecture is the format; the pages are numbered, 1 to 101, and each providing a quick studio lesson, tip, quote, or just something to ponder, each accompanied by an explanatory drawing.

Not only does the book provide great tips and primer to studio, it also serves as a technical and intellectual guide that can be visited again and again during the design process. Often shedding a little more light on the vast world of architectural philosophy each time. Reminders to design in section, or a handy guide on architectural lettering. Every page in this little gem provides a little bit of knowledge certainly worth retaining.

I’d would also think that the 101 things is not to be limited to just architects, but would be of use to anyone design oriented.

Here’s a sample..

1. ‘How to draw a line’

8. ‘Architecture is the thoughtful making of space.’ (Louis Kahn)

12. Design an architectural space to accommodate a specific program, experience, or intent.

17. ‘The more specific a design idea is, the greater its appeal is likely to be.’

18. Any design decision should be justified in at least two ways.’

22. ‘How to make architectural hand-lettering.’

34. ‘Frame a view, don’t merely exhibit it.’

50. ‘Windows look dark in the daytime.’

59. ‘Traditional buildings have thick exterior walls. Modern buildings have thin walls.’

72. ‘Design with models!’

96. ‘Summer people are 22 inches wide. Winter people are 24 inches wide.’

100. ‘Give it a name’

101. Architects are late bloomers.’

’101 Things de-mythologizes the jargon that obscures the real meanings of what is taught in design schools. Anyone interested in design will learn much for this terrific book.’

- President of Boston Architectural College, Theodore C. Landsmark.

Even the size, the chip board cover and price (less than 10 US on amazon from memory!) are appealing, and leaves you no excuse!

Refined, handcrafted laptop bag

2unfold_closeup-2

Renowned as one who loves all things pretty, my search for a new laptop bag has been quite an ardous task. Not only must the bag be fresh, unique and totally unlike anyone elses (not to mention a far cry from the ‘default’ grey one which came with the aforementioned laptop), but it must also be completely practical. Sounds impossible, yes? Wrong – I stumbled across, and fell completely in love with, this baby last night -

Say hello to the 2UNFOLD Multi-use Leather Laptop Bag from HardGraft:

The 2UNFOLD Laptop bag is described as “something of a sartorial transformer” and it’s no guessing as to why. It’s one bag, yet can be used/worn in eight different ways.

Handmade of leather in Italy, the bag is incredibly versatile, easily changes from style to style and has that air of timelessness we all know and love. I know my laptop would feel right at home in this toasty little number, which costs more than half of what I paid for my actually computer – my impractical side still lives! But goodness, it is awesome.

You can purchase this incredibly innovative and desirable bag from here, ships worldwide!

How Bazaar?

Patisserie

The Bazaar at the SLS Hotel at Beverly Hills is a series of eating experiences created by world renown culinary mastermind,  chef Jose Andres (who by the way is also the mastermind behind some wonderful restaurants in the D.C. area like Zaytinya and Oyamel).   The Bazaar is a collection of three restaurants – Bar Centro, Patisserie, and Rojo y Blanco, and is designed to create an adventurous eating experience.  The design of Bazaar and the SLS Hotel was created by the famous Philippe Starck.  Bar Centro is the largest part of the restaurant trio.  The most interesting part of Centro is the extra large jewel box that is located in the center of the dining room.  The glimmering jewel box is reserved for special diners only.  Rojo y Blanco is very much influenced by Spanish design and includes an outdoor cafe.  While Patisserie is a whimsical vision of pink decor.

welovetypography.com is an awesome resource for typographic images and inspiration. New stuff is posted all the time, and you can search by colour, (as I did with yellow) as below. Rad.

Welovetypography is featuring a couple of Rosalie Gascoigne‘s works – anyone lucky enough to catch her exhibition earlier this year at Ian Potter at NGV (Melbourne) knows she is one talented lady.

Villa Dall’ava, Paris, France.

ava4cesto_451x329x90

Villa Dall’ava by Rem Koolhaas and The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) was completed way back in 1991. It was designed for a family of three with seperate ‘apartments’ one for the parents and one for their daughter. The client who wished for a swimming pool on their roof alse specifically requested full panoramic views (from their pool) of the surrounding landscape and city of Paris where the Villa is located.

The site is like a big room, with a boundary made of greenery, garden walls and slopes. It is composed of three parts: a sloping garden, the main volume of the villa, the street level garage with access in a cavity.
The house is conceived as a glass pavilion containing living and dining areas, with two hovering, perpendicular apartments shifted in opposite directions to exploit the view. They are joined by the swimming pool which rests on the concrete structure encased by the glass pavilion.
