The Melbourne Design Market

The Melbourne Design Market in all it’s glory

Last Sunday, thousands of Melburnians, including myself, made their way into the depths of the underground carpark of Federation Square for the biannual Melbourne Design Market.

“As one of the National Design Centre’s most highly-anticipated and well-loved events, the Melbourne Design Market is every design-inclined shop-a-holic’s dream come true…

..Now in its fifth year, the MDM redefines the meaning of market with an outstanding selection of design retailers, emerging and established designers and design students.”

The concrete cave provided a neutral, industrial background which juxtaposed perfectly with the overwhelming creativity erupting uncontrollably from the stalls of the hundreds of designers showing off their innovative wares.

The atmosphere was filled with electricity and although crowded, there was sufficient room to catch at least a glimpse of what each designer had to offer. Of course, a couple laps of the market (we did 3 and a half) are  necessary; it’s hard to take in so many new ideas all in the first or even second round. There was certainly something for everyone with jewellery, homewares, furniture, clothing (albeit a far cry from the cheap stuff you find at the Vic Market) books, stationary and apparel; all tastes were accounted for. Even in a more literal sense – it seemed the market was THE place for a really great cup of coffee (you can really taste the free trade!). Each designer offered their own unique something, and the air was buzzing with “ooh.. that’s clever”s and “why didn’t I think of that?!”s.

Without going into specifics on the designers and products represented (stay tuned!), the quality of products was extremely impressive.  Lucy from over at designfiles.net has kindly let us use some of her photos she took on the day to give you a bit of a taste.

Sadly, its quite amazing how quickly your cash will deplete so it’s wise to set a limit and stick to it - it’s easy to get carried away!

Long story short, the Melbourne Design Market was a great day out and I’m a giddy goat for not mentioning it on here sooner!

Oh well, there’s always next year.
